This is one of the best modelling series ever made and will delight aircraft and general modellers alike. Presented by enthusiast Mark Found, there is literally something for everybody. The fifteen-part series looks at every aspect of the mammoth task of producing a fully working Globemaster. Just take a look at the comprehensive list of subjects covered:
Presenter Mark Found teams up with expert modeller Colin Straus to reveal that they are going to build an enormous 1/9th scale model of Boeing’s C- 17 Globemaster military transport plane. We also visit the first of our series’
Supermodellers, who has constructed a whole naval fleet entirely from matchsticks, and a club who have recreated the London King’s Cross to Leeds main rail line.
The team start the actual constuction with the tail section. Colin shows how to use the plans to position the struts and ribs, which are glued in place. We also see a record breaking 12 foot model of HMS Gloucester being put through its
paces, and a miniature railway with an articulated Garrett loco.

Mark visits a workshop near Norwich, to see how computer aided routers cut the plywood ribs, using the detailed plans that Colin has e-mailed through. Back at Colin’s workshop the team are busy constructing the massive wings. We then watch the Ripmaxdisplay team perform a breathtaking routine of formation model aircraft flying.

Work begins on the fuselage, which being so large, has to be constructed in 4 sections. We also see a jet powered
helicopter being put through its paces.
The team cut out the cargo doors from the body of the plane, and after assembling the fuselage sections, we see the rear
doors open and close.
Mark visits a specialist engineer to discuss the design and construction of the model’s undercarriage. Back in the workshop we see this being fitted to the body of the
plane, and learn how the braking system works. We also see a 1/2 scale traction steam engine and a superb jet powered flying model of the Victor bomber .

Mark takes a trip to Germany to visit the factory where the four jet engines to be used on the model are designed and
manufactured. He also pays a visit to the Dortmund International Model Show, the largest in Europe, to sample some of the finest radio controlled models currently in action. We follow the making of the nacelles or engine housings. We visit a Supermodeller who builds incredibly large, detailed boats, ships and steamers.
The team discuss and install the fuel system and take a look at the compressed air system that will be used to operate
the mechanical features. We visit a Supermodeller who constructs scale working models of Victorian pump engines,
and also a huge model railway layout with great landscaping and rural buildings.
Mark and Colin design the control system including the radio, servos, battery packs and other electronics. Outside,
Mark gets a lesson in flying control techniques, with a smashing final.
We see how the interior detail is created in the cockpit. We visit a professional model making outfit who design and
manufacture some fantastic metal kits, and also a collector of rare antique toy models.
As the Globemaster is a transporter plane, our model needs something to transport and a scale Landrover is decided upon. Mark also visits the British Superlight Model Aircraft Championships where balsa, spacetech clingfilm and rubber bands are the essentials for Supermodeldom.
Mark pays a visit to a parachute manufacturing company, where he learns that there is a lot more to dropping things
out of the back of planes than he had imagined. We visit a huge layout recreating the Battle of Gettysburgh, a major
turning point in the American Civil war, and take a crash course in stunt helicopter flying. The external surfaces of the
model are finished by covering the structure in thin glass cloth and resin. Colin shows Mark how to make and apply a
roundel. We visit Cambridge University where they are using a complex mechanical model of a moth to study insect
flight, and also take a look at a model Vulcan bomber.
Mark visits RAF Brize Norton, where Britain’s squadron of full size C17s are based. He is given a guided tour of a
Globemaster by members of the ground and air crew.

The big day has arrived and all the team are gathered to help Colin prepare the model for its maiden flight...
