Join Driver Simon Barfield and Fireman Paul Rimmer as they crew BR(W) Manor Class 4-6-0 5MT No.7820 'Dinmore Manor' on a journey between Bishops Lydeard near Taunton and the popular seaside resort of Minehead. It's a glorious excursion through beautiful Somerset countryside to the coast.
See all the action on the footplate and along the 'road' from over a dozen cameras on the locomotive.
Working hard, the crew of No.7820 give a fascinating insight into steam operation over the climbing, twisting route - while staff and volunteers of the West Somerset Railway explain how they've grown to love both line and locomotive.
It's a nostalgic reminder of childhood trips to the coast and a real celebration of vintage Somerset steam. Featuring stunning aerial shots of the locomotive and the line.
From the Footplate is a fascinating glimpse of how railways used to be.
Peter Middleton comments:-
This is a professionally produced production mainly showing the footplate crew at work. It is not a driver's eye view as such although there are shots taken from the front of the loco and from the driver's window. After an introductory tour of the West Somerset route partly taken from a helicopter, we then join the footplate crew for the entire journey. Throughout, the driver and fireman tell us of their progress and how they are coping with the varying gradients.
Being a 20 mile line, the DVD runs for 66 minutes. The vision and sound quality is good although the weather was largely overcast. There are various cameras mounted on the loco showing different angles. If you have an interest in the route of the West Somerset Railway and steam operation over the line then this will be particularly interesting to you.
