The NYMR is already familiar to the general public through the television series Heartbeat and the feature films of Harry Potter but now here’s a chance to meet the real people who run this 18 mile long line.

Volunteers like the footplate crews who drive the steam and diesel locomotives up and down the hills of North Yorkshire through some of the most beautiful scenery in England. The Permanent Way gangs who toil on their days off. The catering crews who run a veritable restaurant on wheels. The cleaners who keep the trains spotless. The craftsmen patiently preserving the past, restoring the priceless coaches and engines.

Experience the railway’s Wartime Weekend, commemorating the Second World War, with those participating dressing in period costume for the occasion.(see comments below). Then there is the evocative Diesel gala, the Santa Specials and, of course, Thomas the tank engine. Meet the volunteers working to bring the A4 loco Sir Nigel Gresley back to life – and the millionaire who collects steam engines for a hobby.
