Class 172s
  • There have been a few London Midland 172s visiting Gloucester station recently, which I am assuming that these will be used on future Kidderminster - Gloucester services.

Having seen them, they look impressive. Has anybody else seen one of these new trains?
  • At the moment the Kidderminster - Gloucester proposal has gone quiet so i wouldnt hold your breath, there was a press run back on 2nd august using 1 of the new class 172's the 1st should be in service in september.

There is a thread on the class 172's complete with some really good photo's on uk railforums.

Some people have suggested using the electrostar body on the class 172's to make Bi-mode version, which with there needing to be a order for new DMU's to replace all of the pacers by 2019, it wont be possible to wire all the routes in time, Bombardier could get a large order.
  • We've had some working the Blackpool/Selby route too. Why they're up here is anyone's guess. Northern Rail aren't that short of rolling stock, surely.
  • Northern are surtenly short of stock,, thats why they are getting the class 142's back from FGW and a few class 150's as well. hopefully this should only be til 2014 when some emu's come up to take over the newly electrified routes to Blackpool north.
  • As far as I know, the LM units are to be deployed on routes operating to / from Moor Street in place of the 150s. I guess they have been travelling farther afield for testing & mileage accumulation.

I've been on a couple of the London Overground 172s, which I assume will have a markedly different interior. They seemed OK enough, although the multiple gear changes sounded a little odd, and the fact that then engine maintains it's RPM when going into coast can be a bit deceiving too.
  • I guess they have been travelling farther afield for testing.

  • The trains that are more than likely to head over to the Liverpool - Manchester and Preston - Blackpool services are the displaced Class 317/7 EMU trains, as there won't be any Class 319 EMU trains available.
  • The 317/7 will be kept down on the Greater Anglia routes Peter. It has been in the rumour mill that the 319's were heading north when FCC looked at ordering Siemens units back in 2009. They (the 317's) are being kept in "warm-storage", and will be used during the Olympics on London - Norwich routes.
  • If you have been reading Rail magazine, you will have noticed that Northern Rail are actively looking into acquiring the Class 317/7 for the northern electrification schemes Preston - Blackpool and Liverpool - Manchester.

Only 317722 is at Ilford being used as an experimental prototype train with AC motors being installed on both Driving vehicles and the DC motors in the MSO vehicle being removed.
  • Well apologies. But I do know a lot of people who work for GA, and I've heard different. I pass Ilford depot every day, and they are still there.
  • Class 315's & 317's will be used on the London Liverpool Street to Witham & Braintree routes come the December 2012 timetable change.
